Adobe’s Lightroom 5, along with Photoshop Elements, are fast becoming the replacement for full Photoshop for many photographers. The major reason for the switch is purely financial. This combination of software is still less than half of full Photoshop’s cost. Lightroom 5 (LR5) can be a somewhat daunting program to learn. While parts of it will be familiar to a Photoshop user, other parts will be fairly mystifying. So, enter the Learn by Video disc on Lightroom 5. This method of learning appeals to many, including me, because it is all visual.
First some hard facts about the package. It comes with a DVD and a very short (31 pages) booklet. The booklet is mostly introductory, containing brief explanations of the various modules in Lightroom 5. It does have a synopsis of the new features in the program. The DVD covers that aspect as well. The DVD comprises about 10 hours of instruction which we will discuss later. The package lists for $69.99.The narrator is Mikkel Aaland who has a lengthy background in photography including photographer, teacher and author. His narration is done at a very good pace in a well modulated voice. He is very easy to understand. The DVD offers both Mac and Windows versions. It is rated at a Beginner and Intermediate level, a rating with which I would concur.
When I first received this package, I had some difficulty opening the contents. I have a Windows computer using the Microsoft browser. As I subsequently found out, the DVD looks for the Mozilla Firefox browser to run on a Windows machine. Why this is so, I have no idea. In addition, the booklet contains a few words on starting the course. There are instructions for the Mac and for Windows computers. I don’t know how well the Mac instructions work, but the Windows instructions are misleading.
Ok first of all my apologies to the other reviewers. I assumed that since I have been using other Pearson/Peachpit/Adobe video tutorials without any problems whatsoever, this would be the same and it's just the other users that can't figure it out. Not so!
I'm running the latest Firefox version (25.0.1) with the pop-up blocker turned off and here's what happens when the disk is inserted:
First a command prompt window opens (yes, anyone remember DOS?) followed by Firefox screen with "Pearson-Peachpit" in large letters across the screen. Nothing else. This is immediately followed by a full screen pop-up that is simply a large gray field with no links, menu tabs, etc. And that's as far as the autoplay function takes you.
Now you can play individual video clips by going to your dvd drive in Windows Explorer, opening the Content folder, then Video, then double-clicking on one of 75 individual clip files with names like "02_01-9780133476958". Yeah right.
I expect Adobe/Peachpit's Damon Hampson and/or Victor Gavenda will be weighing in on this and it's great that someone there is paying attention to these reviews. But please, no more boilerplate robo-replies Damon/Victor. You need to bring this to the attention of your corporate masters and they need to either fix this turkey and support it, or take it off the market.
There is absolutely no reason why this program should have to force users to install Firefox and disable pop-up blockers for it to (theoretically) work. Have you guys even heard of Plug-and-Play? It's not a question of if you can. It's a question of if you will. You're Adobe for f's sake! You designed and developed Photoshop, Lightroom, etc., etc., etc. You should be able to get this little thing to work seamlessly in your sleep!
