Who this book is for
Most digital video editing applications have a steep learning curve and a thick manual. Windows Live Movie Maker is not difficult to learn, but it does not come with a manual. This book is for readers who want to quickly and easily edit their digital movies and create DVDs for viewing, but don t want to sift through a lot of technical mumbo jumbo.

I've never cared much for Windows Movie Maker 1 or 2. Still I have found myself using Windows Movie Maker for occasional quickie projects. Windows Movie Maker 1 was a decent first effort by Microsoft, to offer a "free" editor, bundled with the operating system. Windows Movie Maker 2 made a few good improvements. I skipped Windows Vista and only recently installed Windows 7. So I was interested to find out how much Microsoft had improved in the latest iteration, Windows Live Movie Maker.
I picked up a copy of "Getting StartED with Windows Live Movie Maker". For the most part, I've been a fan of the Friends of ED books for a long time. Like all of the Friends of ED books, this one seems to have excellent logical, step-by-step chapter organization. Right away, however, I began wondering "Who is this book written for?" Most of the people I know who might want to use Movie Maker still have tape-based camcorders. One of the primary things they want to do is edit their years of tape-based footage -- or at very least, digitize or ingest it for archival. The book covers hard-drive and memory-based camcorders only. No tape-based workflow to be found here (to be fair, perhaps Movie Maker doesn't support it). If you know how to use a digital "memory" type camcorder you are probably a child of the 90s. You likely don't need a book to show you how to copy files from your memory card.
Assuming footage is already on the hard drive, this book has value to those looking to learn how to edit that footage with Windows Live Movie Maker. It is a quick read. You can easily follow the practice examples using footage downloaded from the book's website (or use your own footage, of course).
