I appreciate learning things visually. Though I am not a pure visual learner, I am able to learn to do something if I see it once. Since I just recently downloaded iPhoto for my iPad, I thought I would see how this book could help me with the fine strokes of iPhoto.
iPhoto isn't that difficult to learn on your own. I think I had mastered about 80% of it by just picking a photo that needs lots of work and going to work on it. Sort of a "learn as you go" method.
But this book taught me the finer points of iPhoto, the points I wouldn't have learned by myself. The Loupe, for example. And what PhotoStream is and how it is to be used. I haven't read it like a typical book is read, that is: front to back, page-by-page. But I've read it more like I'd use a cookbook. I'd go to the index at the back, pick out a topic I needed to learn and turn to that page to investigate.
For me, though, there is a drawback to this book's formatting. It's so BUSY. If you open the book, you see two pages laying in front of you. In my mind, or at least by the way I think, there ought to be few focal points on the page, so that the topic to be learned is clear and at the forefront. The eye is assaulted, however (perhaps "assaulted" is a strong word), with multiple focal points: red arrows, bullet points, photographs, different fonts, colors, background wallpapers. I think I'd benefit from less visual overload. Since I know that my brain doesn't work well when there are too many visual suggestions (I can't go into a bakery shop and pick just one cookie, for example), I'm finding this book a touch hard to engage with. But once I shut out some of the visual cues, by simply ignoring them, I can get some good learning done.
It's a big book physically.
