Underrated

Jeff Revell is probably one of the most underrated authors in his field. My guess is because he tends to write books for specific camera models and people mistake his books for user-manual-replacements. I bought his D5000 book along with my first DSLR. It was the best money I spent on Photography. Not because it taught me how to use my camera, which it did, but because it taught me so much more about photography as I was starting out. Since then I have moved on to more advanced and inspirational books, but I still go back to this book from time to time. For starting out or getting over the initial learning curve, Jeff Revell's series of books is one of the best.

His latest addition on Exposure stays true to its predecessors. There is some repeated material from the camera series. But it is a welcome refresher and goes in-depth into a topic any photographer should revisit. As the title suggests, this isn't a book for advanced photographer. But for beginners and enthusiasts this book, along with Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure, is all you need to tackle all but the most challenging lighting situations.

OK, but contains information from other books by same publisher

I purchased this book along with the Nikon D7000 book from the same publisher. The information in this book is for the beginner photographers and is of average content adequate for that level. More advanced shooters (beginners too)will probably find Bryan Peterson's book Understanding Exposure more suitable. What I found disappointing was that there were numerous paragraphs in this book that were word-for-word from the Nikon D7000 book. Understandably, there are only so many ways to explain a subject, however the content is copied in its entirety. In college they called this plagiarism and the result would be expulsion. Each book was written by different authors, but both are from Peachpit Press. In either book, no credit is given to the other author.

Revel does an excellent job in breaking down exposure into basic elements that are easy to understand . I think this is a excellent primer for anyone new to photography. Highly recommended!

This was a great refresher for me from my days in film school

This book is very well presented, explanations are clear and to the point, even though I had gone through this process when in school, I found this to book to be great source for reference purposes. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to take pictures how you visualize them not the way the camera chooses.
