Eurogames have simple rules and short playing times and emphasize strategy over luck and conflict.
This book examines the form of eurogames, the hobbyist culture that surrounds them, and the way that hobbyists experience the play of such games. It chronicles the evolution of tabletop hobby gaming and explores why hobbyists play them, how players balance competitive play with the demands of an intimate social gathering, and to what extent the social context of the game encounter shapes the playing experience. Combining history, cultural studies, leisure studies, ludology, and play theory, this innovative work highlights a popular alternative trend in the gaming community.Download latest books on mediafire and other links compilation Free Download Eurogames: The Design, Culture and Play of Modern European Board Games [Kindle Edition]

I was looking for a book that would help me get inside the heads and habits of hobby / board game players so I could better develop my own game. 'Eurogames' does that and more. I now have a much greater sense of how the games I enjoy evolved and the growing community of gamers with it.
In tracing the evolution of Eurogames, analysing their various non-confrontational mechanics and the reasons for their corresponding growth in popularity, the author sets the foundation for a detailed analysis of how players of these games interact socially within such games and in between them. Solid critical elements drawing on a broad range of critical theories around game play are combined with key data from a large recent survey of (arguably hard core) gamers from boardgamegeek.com along with plenty of illustrative comments from interviewees covering a range of perspectives. This theoretical, quantitative and qualitative mix was exactly what I was looking for.
The one area it could perhaps have explored more is how both Eurogame design elements have pollinated recent confrontational game designs with more subtle mechanics, and how the social / play culture of all hobby gaming has changed along with its growth in popularity. I daresay that my gaming groups' social style of play has evolved over the last 10 years... I think we probably now play confrontational games in more socially subtly ways. But by the same token we often play Eurogames as hard ball as possible and yearn for more confrontation within them. I sense recent convergence of game design in this area.
This is not a construction kit about how to design a game, but in my view it should be required reading for any current or aspiring hobby game designer. It is also be a good read for lovers of hobby games in general.

Posits credible theories as to the cultural background & memetic forces behind the emergence of Eurogames/German-style board-games, where they're finding other audiences and why those other audiences are embracing them.
A bit erudite at times, but when you put the book down, you'll be able to explain to friends and acquaintances why Settlers of Catan isn't Monopoly-on-an-Island and why games like Catan can be played amicably with the Family on Thanksgiving (have you ever tried to play Risk or Monopoly at a Family get-together after there are a couple empty beer-cased piled up?)
