The fourth edition now updated with many new photographs.
An easily understood book that provides as much inspiration as it does technical instructions.

Freeman is a wealth of experience and has the ability
to convey his vision with an easy and personable voice.
He is a man that loves the craft of photography and
deeply loves nature in all of her forms.
I have read few nature photographers that have put
into words so well the feeling that I have while
capturing nature with the tools of photography.
This is also a very practical book and is divided
into segments of:
Thinking about Nature
Photographing Nature
Photographing Natural Elements and Habitat
Photographing Plants and their Functions
Photographing Animals and their Behavior
Checklists for Field Trip and Safety
He also discusses equipment specific to environments,
lighting techniques, etc. 166 pages with a lot of text and
many wonderful photographs by the author. The size dimensions
described are pretty accurate and it's small enough to take with
you in a backpack, or gear bag.
Freeman reminds us to "look" with a new eye at nature,
to remember that everything in nature is connected and to
use that fact while creating captured images.
Freeman walks his talk and has donated his beautiful property
in Canada to the Canadian Nature Conservancy to ensure that
with any luck that ecosystem will be preserved for many years
to come.
Freeman has been a photographer for several decades and luckily has written
nine other books as well. I have not read them yet, but gladly look
forward to benefitting from more of his wisdom and beautiful photographs.
