I always loved visual arts and spent a lot of time drawing and painting when I was a child, so Photoshop became my new playground right from my first introduction to it. And soon my main job started getting in the way of my new passion. Even though it wasn’t an easy decision, I took a leap of faith and quit my job to go to Australia to study Photography and Digital Imaging. I started marketing myself and working as a commercial photographer in Melbourne right from the beginning of my Commercial Photography course. We photography students had full access to a wonderful spacious studio in South Melbourne, and very soon I started booking photo shoots for local record studios, modeling agencies, and advertising agencies. I not only photographed, but I also art directed and designed CD album covers and booklets for a few Australian musicians in Melbourne. It was an amazing-dream-come-true life for an ex-accountant! I stayed true to my passion and continued working on my skills, both lighting and post production, even after I finished my photography course and left Australia in 2010. I have been published internationally as a retoucher and photographer in the leading Beauty and Hairstyling industry magazines such as Salon International, American Salon, Hair’s How Russia, Canadian Hairdresser, and many more in the past year. I also started sharing my knowledge and skills with young photographers from all over the world through my retouching classes and eBooks in the beginning of 2012. This book was created as an inspiration source with many beautiful images, illustrations, retouching tips, and a few illustrated text and video tutorials for amateur and professional photographers who work in Adobe Photoshop. Short version of review:
If you do any kind of portrait retouching then you can't afford not to buy this book. It has great tips and very inspirational. I have some minor complaints (please read long version of review) but those weren't enough to lower my rating.
Long version:
First I'd like to say that I have absolutely no relation with the author (I wish we could be friends:). As some reviewers complained that friends of the author made positive reviews to increase the rating. I'd like to respond to them by saying Julia is very responsive to her fans and whenever people ask questions or say something nice on a post she wrote in a blog, she replies to every single one of them. Really she is that nice and helpful.
About the book: well,it is full of great tips on retouching from simple tools such as healing brush and clone/stamp tool to advance techniques like frequency separation. The book is also full of inspirational beautiful photos from her portfolio. Not only that, but also a youtube link or smartphone code with some images on how they were retouched. The tips section from other pros is also very helpful. I personally read a couple of them that made me say "wow I didn't think of that before".
Ok, what I didn't like: well, the font is very very small in the pages with retouching tutorials. I mean there's information that you could spread over 40 pages in other books that are somehow fit in 5-6 pages. The content is great, you can easily spend an entire day applying what you learned in 1 page alone. However, for people with bad eye sight, it would be a challenge. I hope that will be fixed in future publications.
Another complaint is that the book feels more like a magazine rather than a reference. But honestly, I could care less.
