Story of Authur Agee and William Gates who were 'recuited' in 8th grade to attend St. Joseph Catholic High School for their basketball playing abilities. With Coach Gene Pingatore the place is like a basketball factory putting out prep players such as Isiah Thomas with the goal apparently being that if/when the players make it big they will donate $ to the school.
After his freshamn year Authur's parents can no longer afford his school costs, even with him working at the school as a janitor so he has to go to a public high school for his sophmore year and from then on he is there with a different coach. Meanwhile, William gets his girlfriend prego and is happy because if he gets gunned down where he lives at least there will be a record (a child) of his existance. Because he is underage he is not charged and/or required to register. His girl resorts to passive/aggresive behavior telling him if he is not there for her, they are done. She has their daughter the day after the team loses in the post seasson. He did not want to tell his coach.
His junior year William hurts his knee at a Nike camp and names of other camp attenders are mentioned, several went on to the NBA. Willaim has surgery but eventually reinjuries his knee and has to have additional surgery. Additional family background is giving about both William's parents and brother and Authur's parents and their difficulties. Swearing throughout.
In their senior years Authur and William and their teams advance to post season before one looses and one goes down state to the finals before loosing, they had been watching Isiah Thomas and the Pistons but turned their interests to the Bulls and Michael Jordan and the Bulls as they begin to win.
"Hoop Dreams" is a true story of Hardship and Triumph by Ben Joravsky. This book was originally published in 1995 by Turner Publishing. It is reprinted and arrangement with Turner Publishing. The Hoop Dreams is about this young boy name Arthur who plays basketball really good. He was discovered one day while shooting ball by a scout name Big Earl. Arthur was a great fan of Isiah, all Arthur wanted to do is meet him and wonder what it be like to see him.
In this story Big Earl know talent when he sees it, and when he saw Arthur he knew had a chance in the NBA. Arthur was a skinny boy around age 14-15 with smewy arms that swept along the ground. Big Earl thought that he should be the one to discover him and take him under his wing. There where rules he need to think about that his father thought him, but Arthur was excited, it all went out the window when Big Earl mentioned Isiah's name. He was an excellent basketball player and went to St. Joe College. Since that's the college he attended now Arthur is thinking about it. Big Earl seems to be promising this young boy dreams pretty early. Big Earl got Arthur wrap around his finger and Arthur just doesn't know it yet.
He is too excited and loves basketball with a passion. Arthur grew up in a well discipline home with just enough support to get through life without begging for anything. He is very appreciative about what he got. His mom is struggling still for the family to eat and have somewhere to stay. She is a very hard worker and Arthur going on to play basketball will be a big break for the family. Arthur is a smart kid and new that this is what he wanted and one it also would make his mom and dad proud.
