Despite the cover photo of a happy and geared-out IPod hip-hopper, this book begins where the others don't: with the question of library location; the iTunes hierarchy and unique, even counter-intuitive, method of organization; the moves the audio collector should make before going wild with the innumerable features of either the program or an iPod Touch 4g. As I struggle to get this potentially Frankensteinian monster under control, I read horror stories by other users who suddenly find that, thanks largely to Apple's iCloud (and perhaps others, such as Amazon's), a single music file has managed to "clone itself" into as many as 2000 "apparent" duplicates.
Unfortunately, the book doesn't go quite that far. There's no mention in the index, for instance, of "deduping," which many of us now realize is a priority, the challenge being one of finding an efficient and "safe" 3rd-party program that's faster than the two "deduping" methods that are built into the iTunes program.
For those of us who have entrusted iTunes not only with tens of thousands of downloaded Tunes and "ripped" CDs but with hundreds of hours of recorded audio--from FM broadcasts as well as the now-popular high-quality 24-bit personal digital audio recorders (e.g Zoom H2, Sony PCM-50, Tascam DR05)--the challenge of keeping files organized efficiently and safely--on hard-drives and in the Cloud--is one requiring an understanding of iTunes architecture, its default methods and optional overrides, the hypothetical and actual consequences of each decision made by the user.
Whereas it was formerly (i.e "pre-iCloud") a no-brainer to burn playlists to CD, iTunes now forbids it in instances where the playlist contains a mix of iTunes and non-iTunes.
