I received this book as a gift from a friend and boy has it been a great addition to my photography tool box.
I am an amateur/hobbyist photographer who still hasn't completely explored all of the features of my digital cameras. This book is a wonderful guide that covers your point and shoot camera from soup to nuts.
It starts out with the very basic of the basics, discussing what you should look for when you are planning to purchase a camera. They cover the features that are available as well as explaining the most basic differences between digital and optical zoom to more advanced features such as articulated LCD/Touch screens.
This book breaks it down in a simple, very easy to read manner that anyone can understand and covers everything from what type of camera strap is best to how to compose virtually any shot in any light.
This book is really a photography class. I have learned more about my digital camera (and the book covers most brands) by reading this book than in all the time I've fumbled through reading the manuals and just practicing shooting.
I would recommend this book to both absolute beginners up to advanced photographers. It is packed with information but presented in a format and language that just about anyone can benefit from. I know my copy has post it notes all through it and is one I go back to again and again. It fits in my camera bag so it is always at my fingertips.
The chapters are clear (and color coded) and packed with valuable information and tips to make your photography better and your experience much more enjoyable. For me, the chapter on Scene Modes was really helpful as it explains each mode thoroughly and now they make sense to me.
Manuals that come with cameras are important. They teach the user all about the features and the tech specs, but offer very little about how to actually take good photos with their new purchase. Those who are new to point-and-shoot digital cameras quite often find themselves frustrated, as after reading the documentation, they have learned very little about what they hoped to learn: how to take a decent photo.
David Busch's Point-and-Shoot Compact Field Guide says it in the introduction: when the new user is ready to "graduate from point-and-shoot photography to think-and-shoot creativity, this book will help you put the amazing features hidden inside even the most humble snapshot camera to work." There's a lot more, but that's the basic concept in a nutshell, and it lives up to that promise within its pages.
