The two volumes of the Learning to Photograph series give students and interested amateur photographers essential information about technique and design as well as an understanding of the big concepts of photography.
This first volume brings readers up to speed on the basics of camera technology: optics and exposure. The authors provide an overview of these technical elements before going into detail about how cameras and lenses work and how they influence one another. Building upon this foundation, the authors discuss the practical application of this knowledge, showing readers how to put this information to use to create images and realize ideas effectively.
The numerous example photos and informational graphics not only illustrate the concepts at hand, but also make the lessons visually pleasing and offer inspiring templates for readers to imitate in their own craft.
Topics include:
- Optics and lenses
- Exposure metering and control
- Image sensors, viewfinders, and displays
- Live view and video functionality
- Flash units and additional accessories
- The right camera
- Photo technology in practice
The subsequent volume in the
Learning to Photograph series addresses visual concepts and composition.

This book is brilliant in its concept and design. I opened it this morning and planned to read a little each night. That didn't happen, I read it cover to cover. As point of reference... I've been a photographer for over 30 years, and well traveled and published. I now teach commercial photography and do a little consulting for some of the major camera software companies. I'm also humbled by great photographers and consider myself a constant learner. I've been searching for a book that would allow beginning photographers to get beyond the point and shoot mode (that new digital camera systems afford) to a place where they learn more of the craft and how the camera is like a brush an artist uses on a canvas. Learning to Photograph to Photograph is perfect for the beginner who wants to truly understand the systems, and how they blend into refined image creation.
You'll learn about simple and advanced camera operations; exposure control through f-stop; shutter speed and ISO speeds; and an extraordinary explanation of lens types-- from telephoto to shift lenses. The reader will also learn about CMOS and CCD arrays and even Carver Mead's Foveon X3 chip is accurately portrayed in ability to capture accurate color (with noise that is digitally suppressed). The lighting section covers the basics of on-camera lighting and simple (stand-alone) strobe lights and modifiers. The book could have been more in-depth on the used of on-camera with remote triggered strobes... but this is the only (minor) short coming I found in the book. The book is loaded simple descriptions of how camera systems work and how they apply to different shooting needs and requirements.
