Recently I was given a copy of this new book entitled David Busch's Close-Up and Macro Photography Compact Field Guide. For someone who has been doing this since the 1970s, it might seem an odd choice, but we all need to occasionally review our own techniques, maybe break some ingrained (bad) habits, and above all learn something new.
The authors get right into with this book, but first let's touch in what it is, and what it isn't. This is a Compact Field Guide from author Busch's ongoing series, and one covering the basics of close-up and macro photography. It's an excellent starting point for anyone just getting into doing close-ups with a digital camera; it's that simple. It's not an immense brand-specific volume for a studio or field photographer. A quick search here on Amazon will help you find plenty of those if that's what you're seeking.
This book is comprised of six chapters, and within them you'll find the following:
1. Quick Setup Guide
The authors get right into it by explaining that the terms macro and close-up photography are used interchangeably today, then offer an overview of how both standard and true classic macro lenses are used. There's a lot of meat in this beginning chapter, but what really stands out for this reader is their topic on Camera Handling for Close-Ups (page9-10). This is an overlooked topic that should be included in every basic photography book, as the proper method for holding a camera carry through with almost all aspects of photography itself.
