Coffee-table book rarely make good textbooks. However, The New Joy of Digital Photography, by Jeff Wignall, is the textbook I use in my adult education class on digital photography. This book is an update of Jeff's original tome, which itself was a new edition of the photography classic The Joy of Photography. Moran, a leading tugboat company, has a tagline: "The best in the business." When it comes to photography and the teaching of same, Jeff Wignall is truly the best in the business. I am a retired software company president and a life-long serious amateur photographer. There are three reasons why I use "Joy" in my classroom: great writing, superb textbook, and a beautiful volume.
To be a success as an author your book must grab the reader. Dull and boring must be banished; lively and entertaining rule. Did you know what Elvis Presley had to do with digital photography? This book will explain the connection. Almost every page of Joy dances with the Wignall wit. How Jeff weaves in technical material like aperture and shutter speed by quoting Mr. Spock of Star Trek fame speaks to the genius of his word-smithing. Before each class I reread the student's assignment, so I have read this book dozens of time. I can honestly say that I enjoy it each time I take book in hand.
As great as good writing is, a book would be of no value in the classroom if it were not an excellent vehicle for imparting photographic knowledge. Teaching is not about the teacher nor the author. It is about the student. A book needs to deliver the author's knowledge directly to the reader. Joy does this through the vehicle of art, and the releasing of the "inner artist" in us all. Here Wignall's philosophy and my own are right in sync.
