For some reason, most Final Cut Pro X books seem to focus on providing either a printed variation of Apple's own built-in reference material, an expanded menu command reference, or a set of chapters based on tasks that fore you to interpret with your own content. But if you're a beginner to Final Cut Pro X, you'll be happy that "The Craft of the Cut" is none of these.
In this detailed, hands-on tutorial, you not only learn how to use Final Cut Pro through building an actual assembled short subject movie, you also learn the basics of professional video production - scripts, reports and logs (continuity shots, continuity scripts, multiple takes on the same scene, etc). I'm not a professional video editor, so I found this extra dimension not only fascinating but also helpful in how I can setup a more sophisticated capture beyond your typical "vacation video". The book's authors actually work in the television industry and their experience shows.
Each chapter builds on the elements of post-production process to
- import and organize raw footage
- assembly and edit of a rough cut
- refinining the cut with secondary story lines, compound clips and transitions, editing of audio
- editing the cut with alternate scenes, cutting dialog, editing action
- building on the soundtrack with music and alternate dialog
- working with effects, color corrections, and titles
- sharing and exporting
Included with The Craft of the Cut is a DVD with a compressed disc image containing raw footage, alternate takes, audio and still source media, and example projects and final content to compare with what you build.
