Bottom line up front: The Dynamic Posing Guide: Modern Techniques for Digital Photographers is a fantastic book for beginner/intermediate photographers interested in photographing female portrait or fashion photography. Essentially does not cover photographing men or children.
Craig Stidham and Jeanne Harris have leveraged their unique experiences as fashion photographer and marketing director, respectively, to write Dynamic Posing Guide: Modern Techniques for Digital Photographers. They provide a well thought out approach for learning how to improve photographing women that starts with the basics from a perspective of human anatomy, and the pages on “the human figure as a diagram” is one of the most clear and concise I’ve seen. From there they build to show you how to use those fundamentals to build classic fashion photography poses. This will seem intuitive to most viewers of the photographs, since they’ve been used in advertising and marketing pretty much everywhere—but now you’ll have the tools to reproduce those poses in your photographs to make your models look better by reflecting what they already expect to look like at some subliminal level. Additional discussion is made on how to improve your camera angles and what kind of equipment to use, but those discussions seem somewhat out of place given the context of the book. Most photographers should already know much of the information, but beginner/intermediate photographers should find some good information there. The most valuable portion of the book, in my opinion, is the chapter on breaking the rules.
The target market for this book is the professional photographer (current or aspiring) who will be snapping high fashion models using the best equipment. This is not, for the most part, a book which will assist a new dad to get the baby snaps of his newborn daughter or will help very much getting your family vacation album to improve.
The author obviously knows an enormous amount about this topic and explains it all in sufficient detail for anybody to understand. In fact, there is so much detail that reading this alone won't do much for you. To get the benefit from the book, you'd need to read a single small section, then setup with a model for a few hours of practice until the 'look' sinks in. Then and only then would you be able to take that single posing issue and apply it to your original work in the field.
The structure of the book for the most part is the author explaining a certain principle such as placement of hands or feet or torso attitude. Then the author explains right and wrong for each of these principles using excellent photographs illustrating not only the right way, but variants which show the wrong way.
The author is not only a high fashion photographer but has access to high fashion models and they look the part. The author goes on and on about how important it is to keep the models looking slim with many of the wrong pose variants wrong by making the model look thicker or having `man hands' or showing a body part in a less than ideally flattering manner. There are a few minor comments about shooting males but the real emphasis of the book are those long, leggy and thin female models you'll see in places like Vogue magazine. Using these techniques on the Real Housewives of Your Home Town may yield results which would be bizarre or laughable.
