"Old Red" is an engaging catalog of interesting insights on Texas, Galveston, and UTMB.
Until reading it, I never knew what a remarkable structure Old Red is, historically and architecturally. But Ms. Wooten tells its story with great skill. I was wholly unaware of how close Old Red has come to being bulldozed. How thankful I am that it hasn't met such a fate, and presumably won't, thanks to its champions like Ms. Wooten.
Galveston architect Nicholas Clayton, designer of Old Red, the Bishop's Palace and other Galveston landmarks, was the character who fascinated me the most, especially the fact that he died penniless and his passing was barely mentioned in Galveston newspapers.
