An action-packed adventure based on the award-winning videogame from id Software, the creators of DOOM® and QUAKE®, Rage follows one man’s fight to save the future of humanity in a ravaged, post-apocalyptic world. The asteroid Apophis has annihilated Earth, and only a small percentage of humanity’s best and brightest have been saved. Buried deep below the ground in life-sustaining Arks, these chosen few are tasked with one vital mission—to restore civilization to a devastated planet hundreds of years after the impact.
When Lieutenant Nick Raine emerges from his Ark, he finds a future indistinguishable from nightmare. Humankind has not been entirely destroyed on the surface world, and a primitive new society has emerged in which life is nasty, brutish, and short. Mutants and bandits prey upon the weak, and a mysterious military group known as the Authority preys upon everyone. Worst of all, a would-be tyrant seeks to impose his will upon the shattered planet. Armed with nothing more than his combat training and survival instincts, Raine must rise to meet the challenges of the wasteland.

I'm more than halfway through and I can't put it down. I would recommend anyone that decides to take a leap of faith on books from the video game genre this one would be it--it reads more like a book that a video game was inspired from and not the other way around. I know it sounds counter intuitive but I would recommend watching the "Uprising Trailer" at [....] or on [....] because it enhances the richness of this world.
The action is fast paced and the author does a wonderful job of making me want to know what's next--he accomplishes this by sending the main character from one setting to the next, one mystery and action sequence leading to another setting and set of characters to discover. Always a sign of an entertaining and good book for me is when I can't put it down, and this has had me totally hooked after the protagonist wakes up from his Cryogenic sleep of 100 years--from there it's buckle up and enjoy the ride. There are a couple of minor nitpicks I have about some of the characters and wished the author got more into the *science* of cryogenic hibernation and nanotrites but perhaps it was sacrificed for fast paced addictive narrative.
Only decision I have left is...do I finish the next 180+ pages and possibly spoil my gaming experience when the game ships at the beginning of October? Decisions, decisions--probably will finish it--since i've never been a person with too much patience :)
Definitely recommended reading, this is definitely the "popcorn movie" in book form--it's no Dostoevsky novel but not cheesy either.

I typically enjoy video game books, despite those authors oftentimes not having the ability to stretch out their possibly-unscratched potential in making the experience feel unique (as expected since they're oftentimes outsourced). What boggles my mind with Costello's work is how many of the bland character arcs and inane moments in writing are not only here from the game he took direct involvement in, but also regurgitates numerous plot points that happened within the game itself...just with another character. To cover all of my points, it's best if I do the rest of the review in a checklist fashion:
-The protagonist in RAGE (book) saves the same leader, plans to fight The Authority in the same way, and ends in a similar fashion to the game. The problem? He completes these actions decades before the "Ark Survivor" on RAGE (game) is even taken out of cyrosleep.
-Two characters from the game (remember: game's setting takes place after this) are killed in this book--and feel like unrealistic portrayals of what they are in the game.
-Boring main character
-Bland prose with sub-standard storytelling
-and on and on and on
The book can't be considered canon to the RAGE universe set up in the game, any unique characters here will be forgotten once the book is put down, and the writing isn't even worthy of being called mediocre. That $11.99 you're looking to spend can go towards almost any contemporary masterpiece in literature on the Kindle Store or down the toilet with this purchase. Your call.
